Having grown up in Armadale, this editor has strong childhood memories not only of the ominous look on Mum’s face whenever we heard the wailing siren that used to call volunteers to action, but the sheer joy of having those same volunteers visit our little street at Christmas time on the back of big fire truck.

And 40+ years later, it is so wonderful to see that tradition alive and well – this time in Muchea – but we are sure it is replicated in many towns across our great State.

To the amazing women and men of our incredible volunteer bush fire service, thank you.

And to the parents of the children who are lucky enough to be forming the same powerful, positive memories that we now share, please prompt your kids when they are old enough to think about the sacrifices those people make for us, especially when they aren’t wearing Santa suits – and appreciate just how lucky we all are to have them watching our backs 24/7.
