• McGowan Government investing $8 million to replace ageing Kensington Fire Station
  • New station to have expanded vehicle bay, improved training facilities and rescue pad
  • Replacement for 47-year-old existing fire station

Construction of a modern $8 million fire station in Kensington is set to begin this month to replace the current facility built nearly 50 years ago.

Emergency Services Minister Francis Logan and Victoria Park MLA Ben Wyatt marked the start of construction today with an official sod-turning at the new site.

The new station has been designed to meet the changing needs of the surrounding area, which now includes more high-rise apartments and commercial buildings.

It is expected to open early next year and will have a larger vehicle bay, a new training tower and rescue pad, and an integrated gym and outdoor area.

The current Kensington firefighters have been involved in the design process to ensure the new station would meet their needs.

The new station, funded from the Emergency Services Levy, will be based at the rear of the existing station, which was built in 1973.

The location means the new station will retain its current position alongside local WA Police and St John Ambulance stations.

Comments attributed to Emergency Services Minister Francis Logan:

“The Kensington Fire and Rescue Service is currently housed in a station built nearly 50 years ago so naturally the firefighting practices have changed significantly in that time.

“The surrounding areas now include more high-rise apartments and commercial buildings, which require different firefighting methods that the new station will be better able to meet.

“The new station also has the capacity for expansion, which means we can increase the number of firefighters and appliances based in Kensington to accommodate for population growth and changes to the urban landscape.”

Comments attributed to Victoria Park MLA Ben Wyatt:

“This is great news for the area and something that has been a long time coming so I’m very pleased that the McGowan Government has invested in this new $8 million fire station.

“The areas serviced by the Kensington fire station have changed significantly since the current station was built in the early seventies so this new fire station will be much better able to cater for the changed landscape.

“Our current firefighters have a done a fantastic job looking after our community safety with their existing facility.

“I am confident that with their new modern station and increased training facilities our firefighters will be well served into the future as they continue to do an excellent job protecting our communities.”
