While many would assume that the emergency services, and in particular fire fighting, is an overwhelmingly male-dominated sector, the fact is that Western Australia’s largest agency – the Volunteer Bush Fire Service – has almost an even split of women to men.

The official statistics show that women make up between 30% and 40% of the more than 20,000 registered volunteers in the service. However we know there is probably another 10% of women who perform active duties in and around WA’s 580 Volunteer Bush Fire Brigades but choose not to be formally “registered”.

For that reason, the AVBFB is proud to engage, support and promote women and men as equally valuable members of our incredible service.
