It is with immense sadness that we advise of the passing of a true honest gentleman, Mr Brian Watkins. Brian lost his battle with the Big C on Monday night, mercifully surrounded by friends and family.

Brian was a man of rare honour and integrity. His will to do the right thing and lend a helping hand to anyone in need was only surpassed by his determination to do without a fuss, often so quietly that the beneficiaries of his generosity never knew it was his work behind the scenes that had turned their misfortunes around.

Sponsor's message

Although humble in this and many other ways, Brian wasn’t a shrinking violet when the truth was at risk. Not one to shy from a great debate, Brian’s broad knowledge and quick wit meant most who ever tried to sneak something past him was soon regretting their attempt – although his generosity often saw him swap a knockout blow for a one-liner that would leave everyone with smiles on their faces.

Brian’s passion, humility and dignity made him an excellent mentor and he led many volunteers by example to develop a deep understanding of what community really means – finding personal satisfaction in working in the best interests of the greater good. He taught in a way that so many could easily learn and always with fairness and equity central to his message.

As well as the individuals left better off by Brian’s time with us, the skills and knowledge he shared with numerous working groups over the years will continue to benefit our whole community for many generations to come.

Most of all, Brian was great friend and even better mate to many.

Sponsor's message

His trail has left massive footprints of care and compassion in the hearts of those of us who were fortunate to have known him and will be forever and deeply missed.

Brian, ol’ mate, you did us all very proud.

We salute and honour you for who you were and everything you have done for so many left behind. It’s time to hang up your boots and rest.

I pray that you are at peace in God’s arms now and send my love and compassion to all your family and friends at this challenging time. I will miss you dearly my friend and mentor.
