The following Ministerial Statement was read into Parliament today by the Hon Fran Logan, Emergency Services Minister:

Statement by Minister for Emergency Services

MR F. LOGAN: I would like to inform the house of the opening of three newly built, fit-for-purpose volunteer bushfire brigade sheds in Scaddan, Napier and King River, in the great southern region. It was a great honour to travel to these communities to attend the official openings of these sheds and to have a chat and cup of tea with the volunteers and community members who have worked tirelessly to see the sheds and renovations come to fruition. These facilities will not only strengthen emergency response in the regions, but also provide volunteers with a training hub to improve their skills, and a place for the community to gather. I acknowledge the strength and resilience that the Scaddan community has shown following the 2015 fires, which tragically claimed four lives, including a member of the Scaddan brigade, Mr Kym Curnow. It is my hope that this new shed will help in some small way as the area continues its recovery, and I wish them all the best. The following day I visited Napier, just outside Albany, to take part in the opening of the brigade’s new purpose-built facility. For many years, the appliances had been stored on private property so this new shed, next to the community hall, was certainly a welcome build. This new facility includes a new operations base that will strengthen the brigade’s capability to respond to incidents and provide a more efficient and coordinated response. Later that day I attended the King River brigade to join the opening of the $148 000 extension to their shed. It includes a new communications room, which was named in honour of brigade member Alan Hawley, who has dedicated many decades to the brigade. I would like to acknowledge the brigade’s efforts in improving its facility and I trust it will strengthen its capabilities, enhance its visibility in the community and give the brigade room to grow.
