Bushfires have prompted plenty of new volunteer firefighters, but Cape Burney Bushfire Brigade still wants more members.

Brigade Capt. Rob Roffey said it was free to join and members found it rewarding and fun.

“Just recently, a couple of City of Greater Geraldton fire brigade members have gone over east to help fight fires there,” he said.

“We sent one member down to Collie and the same member went to Coolgardie.”

Besides fighting fires, members participate in prescribed burns and train for two hours a month on a Sunday afternoon.

Mr Roffey said they also participated in events such as foreshore displays on Australia Day and Geraldton’s annual Sunshine Festival.

“I like the fact I can give back to the community and I like to meet new friends and learn new skills,” he said. “We are very family-orientated brigade, so we do things for the whole family like end-of-the-year Christmas parties.

“Most of our members have got families who come along every now and then and enjoy themselves.”

Membership inquiries are welcome. Contact the brigade via Facebook, 0437 212 133 or [email protected].
