The Association of Volunteer Bush Fire Brigades (AVBFB), SES volunteers Association and WA Local Government Association met key DFES leaders yesterday to discuss how the Local Government Grants Scheme process and outcomes could be improved to deliver more transparency, less red-tape and greater equity for the volunteers and local government managers involved.

While the discussions between stakeholders were sometimes robust, the determination and commitment of everyone at the meeting to not only identify the core issues, but also work positively toward solutions, made the three-hour meeting productive and very worthwhile.

AVBFB President Dave Gossage said, “After trying to work with government to improve the whole ESL system over the past five years, yesterday’s meeting demonstrated that the new leadership team at DFES now understands some of the biggest issues we face and is genuinely consulting with the volunteer association to bring about actual, positive change.”
