A volunteer member of the tireless AVBFB Committee did a day trip to Merredin today to attend the Great Eastern DOAC.

Those who know us understand that we do our best to get around to as many regional meetings as possible but since every member of the Committee is a volunteer and our current government funding to represent the State’s 580 Bush Fire Brigades is around $100,000 per annum, it is a big ask.

Nevertheless, we got there today to listen, inform and participate in a collaborative discussion among local governments about all things bush fire.

Some of the issues that drew the most interest included:

  • Training and the changes that the AVBFB have lobbied hard to achieve to bring more flexibility and relevance to volunteer modules.
  • Fit for purpose vehicles and how there is a strong need for a much more flexible approach to the types of appliances available to Brigades in different areas of the state.
  • The ESL and how it’s operation has evolved away from its original good intent
  • New permits and the issues they have brought
  • Insurance issues caused largely by inaccurate information being distributed

All in all, it was a tiring, yet productive day for all and the Association thanks the various Shires involved for working so hard and openly to address the many challenges Volunteers and their Brigades often face when working in small regional areas.
