The Association of Volunteer Bush Fire Brigades continued with its endeavours to meet with more volunteers. This time we met with volunteers from the South Metropolitan Zone at the Mandogalup Fire Station on Wednesday, 15th March.
We thank the volunteers who attended for giving up their time and sharing their views with the Association and other fellow Bush Fire Brigade volunteers.
We also thank Captain Craig Treeby and the Mandogalup Bush Fire Brigade for hosting the meeting at their station.
The meeting was Chaired by the Association’s State President, Dave Gossage AFSM, with support from CEO, Tony Papafilis and the Association’s volunteer Events Organiser, Julian Cole.
Dave Gossage gave the volunteers a thorough overview of the Association’s extensive list of activities and issues being pursued for Bush Fire Brigades. This gave the meeting a more informed understanding of Association and our efforts to represent volunteers’ interests.
Many of the matters covered by Dave Gossage elicited further discussion amongst the volunteers. In turn, volunteers raised other issues raised that have added to the Association’s growing list of issues to be pursued on behalf of volunteers and communities exposed to bush fires.
Some of the matters of interest that were discussed at some length were:
· Future fleet, current vehicles, tyres and mechanical support on fire grounds;
· Emergency Services Levy review and problems encountered under current system;
· Mobilisation of brigades;
· Service and honours medals;
· Ferguson Inquiry reform recommendations and the independent Rural Fire Service,
The Association’s representatives were very pleased with the flow of ideas and information through the meeting.
There was a very positive atmosphere amongst the volunteers with fun and banter throughout the night and those present indicated their satisfaction with the meeting by agreeing to hold another meeting in mid July, and the Association looks forward to it.
