HELENSBURGH BUSH FIRE BRIGADE — "READY FOR ACTION"

About our Brigade

Helensburgh Bush Fire Brigade was formed around 1940 to provide fire protection to the village of Helensburgh, located around 50km south of Sydney at the edge of the Royal National Park.

The brigade currently has around 30 active members, drawn from all around the township, and from all age groups and backgrounds. We meet at the station each weekend to perform maintenance, training, and the many other activities that are needed to maintain a busy RFS brigade.

An RFS Tanker

Our equipment consists of two modern "Category 1" 4WD tankers, like the picture to the right, each carrying 3,500 litres of water, a high-power diesel pump, and a massive collection of equipment to allow us to fight fires in a variety of ways. These vehicles mass around 13 tonnes, and can transport a crew of 6 firefighters.

The brigade attends around 120 emergency call-outs a year, ranging from active bushfires, false alarms, motor-vehicle accidents to search and rescue operations. In addition to this, our members often travel to other parts of the state and further afield, to large fire fighting operations such as the Victorian and Blue Mountains fires of 2007.
